What's a Quaternion?
A quaternion (kwəˈtəːni.ən) is an elegant mathematical way of describing rotation in 3D space with just four numbers. Why should you care about that?
Odds are, you probably don't need to, unless you you deal with issues like Euler angle gimbal lock or matrix orthogonality on a daily basis. But these are very real problems that the quaternion solves.
Suffice to say, they are much simpler to write down and far easier to compute than other ways of expressing rotation information. and they don't suffer from the normal pitfalls of measuring angles, like when rolling over from 359º to 0º, or floating point rounding errors that result from matrix transformations.
why name a media company after it?
Even though they are hard to understand (harder still to condense into an 'about us' section), by using them, whole classes of problems are eliminated. This way of describing rotation shows up in countless real-world problems, from gaming to science and beyond, and can improve the way we operate .
